Refugee status

Refugee status is granted to the following people: 

  • An alien who has been granted asylum in Finland 
  • An alien who has been issued a residence permit on the basis of refugee status and admitted to Finland within the refugee quota 
  • A family member of the above -mentioned alien who has been granted a residence permit on the basis of family ties and who is to be regarded as a refugee.

Withdrawal of refugee status

A person will cease to be a refugee if he or she 

  • voluntarily re-avails him or herself of the protection of the country of his or her nationality; ·
  • having lost his or her nationality, voluntarily re-acquires it; 
  • acquires a new nationality and is able to enjoy the protection of the country of his or her new nationality; 
  • voluntarily re-establishes him or herself in the country which he or she left or outside which he or she remained owing to fear of persecution; or 
  • evidently no longer stands in need of protection as the circumstances which caused him or her to be a refugee no longer exist.

Cancellation of refugee status

Refugee status is cancelled if the refugee has wilfully or knowingly provided incorrect information or concealed information when applying for asylum or for refugee status. Cancelling refugee status also requires that the concealment or provision of incorrect information affected the decision.
