Important to know when applying for citizenship

Carefully fill in the form and append the further clarifications indicated on the form. Before submitting the application, make sure that

  • You have lived in Finland for a sufficient period of time,
  • You have a language certificate for sufficient skills in Finnish or Swedish,
  • You meet the other requirements for naturalisation.

If you do not meet the requirements for naturalisation, you risk receiving a negative decision.

The Finnish Immigration Service will not send a confirmation of receipt of application.

In order to investigate whether or not you meet the requirements for naturalisation, the Finnish Immigration Service may request information or statements from various authorities, such as

  • Local police (offences, restraining orders),
  • Enforcement authorities (due liabilities on grounds of maintenance obligation and payment obligation under public law)
  • Tax authorities (tax information, tax liabilities)
  • Social Insurance Institution (benefits received) " Social welfare authorities (benefits received)
  • National Bureau of Investigation and Security Police (state security or public order)
