Decision for EU citizens may take only one day
As EU citizens seeking asylum in Finland are considered to come from a safe
country of origin, their applications are examined using the accelerated
procedure. A safe country of origin is deemed to be a State in which the
applicant is in no danger of being persecuted or is not subject to infringements
of human rights. Almost without exception, EU citizens will receive a negative
decision and, if necessary, will be turned back to their home country.
In January–April 2010, Bulgarians were the second biggest group seeking
asylum in Finland; only Somalis were one person more. With respect to them,
the processing time is the shortest of all – with the Finnish Immigration
Service being able, in the most rapid cases, to make decisions on the very day
of receiving a report from the police or the Finnish Border Guard.
