Coming to Finland on other grounds

You may apply for a residence permit on special grounds

When you are applying for a residence permit for Finland, you must have grounds for the application as specified in the Finnish Aliens Act. The most common grounds for receiving a residence permit are studying, working, self-employment, and family ties in Finland.

You may also apply for a residence permit on other special grounds. Other special grounds may be, for example, a stable intimate relationship and the intention to marry or that you have become a victim of human trafficking. However, travelling is not accepted as special grounds.

To obtain a residence permit, you must be able to make your own living in Finland.

Citizens of the EU/EEA member states

If you are a citizen of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland you will not require a residence permit for Finland.

Information on permit matters is available from the police.
